Clearly, all Margaery really needed to know about politics she learned at the feet of her fearsome grandmother, Lady Olenna Tyrell. Imagine Downton Abbey’s Dowager Countess completely stripped of even the pretense of being polite to anyone for any reason and you’ve got this delightful old cutthroat, played with deadpan panache by leather-catsuit legend Diana Rigg. In short order she insults Renly, her son, her dead husband, her female friends and relatives and handmaidens, the Lannisters, the waiter – pretty much everyone but the three women sitting at the table, talking treason about the King. Sansa’s white-knuckle terror over the very idea of saying something negative about Joffrey for others to hear is so obvious you want to reach through the screen and wrap her in a blanket or something (man, Sophie Turner rules), which only proves how fearless and confident Lady Olenna is in her own security and power. She’s rich, powerful, well-connected, intelligent, and just plain out of fucks to give. They say the graveyards of the world are full of indispensable men, but she’s not a man, is she? What a thrill to watch three females decide their own fates for a change.

Smiling Loras from season 1 - 3
Whelp, it looks like dear old Margaery knows how to play the game a lot better than Sansa ever could.
Margaery is older than Sansa and has a significant better support system. Her grandmother is a priceless asset and she has been prepared to deal with the back stabbing politics of King’s Landing.
Sansa has no support system and her father was well meaning but clueless. She was thrown into this situation with nothing. But Sansa is learning all the time.
To say that Margaery is better than Sansa ever could be is a disservice to Sansa and her journey.
And, uh, let’s not forget that the Tyrells’ first alliance was with Renly. Live and learn.
I think the big difference between the Tyrells and the Lannisters is that the Tyrells are a matriarch family. The Tyrells are run by a woman. Olenna is completely in charge of that family. The Lannisters are run by Tywin Lannister. It’s a very virile, very masculine-dominated Alpha Male family. And Cersei, as Lena has so beautifully portrayed in previous seasons, she feels a bit trapped and dominated and wishes she could have been a man so that she could get on the battlefield and fight. She feels suppressed by her gender. The interesting thing about Margaery is that she’s more cut from the cloth as a protegée of her grandmother, so she knows what it’s like for a woman to be in charge. I’m sure that in Margaery’s head, she’s hoping and believing that she can marry Joffrey, have a son and put her son on the throne and be a matriarch herself.
casual reminder that garlan tyrell is amazing and basically the only person genuinely nice to sansa at her wedding and is an excellent swordsman and trains against three or four men at a time but has no interest in tourneys or fame unlike…

Margaery Tyrell.
Margaery was different, though. Sweet and gentle, yet there was a little of her grandmother in her, too. A Storm of Swords.
