“In 2009, two doctors, Sharon Hayes and Stacey Tantleff-Dunn, did a study on animated characters and young girls’ self-image. After watching clips of cartoon characters who were princesses, the participants were asked what made a “real princess.” The results might be different from what you would expect: these girls, around the ages of six and seven, generally did not report having a desire to be thinner after studying and watching the narrow-waisted princesses. Instead, when asked how they could become a princess, many of the girls reported that they would need to change their skin color. They responded with things like “I’d paint myself white” and “I would change from brown skin to white skin.””

It always struck me that men actually might benefit from the “bumbling idiot” stereotype. In very many of the dysfunctional heterosexual relationships I’ve observed, men basically only work then come home and do nothing, and women do a majority of the actual work and men use this learned or feigned helplessness to get women to do everything for them. They’re socialized this way, I think. I married this very equality talking, sensitive, feminist-ally, politically correct kind of man and yet the day we got back from our honeymoon, my ex husband suddenly became an infant who no longer knew how to operate an iron, pack a grocery bag, balance the budget, take a pee without splattering the entire bathroom, flush the toilet, cook his own meals, return phone calls, put his own dishes in the sink before they turned moldy, or even drop letters off at the post office.

The bumbling idiot stereotype doesn’t hurt men. Men are not being denied jobs or health care or legal rights because of being seen as bumbling idiots. They benefit from the stereotype because it means that women do everything.

Ruby Rhod is one of my favorite characters in sci-fi ever because he is Luc Besson’s vision of the hetero sex symbol of the future: a flamboyant, emotionally labile man who wears skin-tight leopard print or decks himself in roses, a man who accessorizes with big jewelry and dabbles in cosmetics. And the ladies love him. Everything about him screams “gay” according to our stereotypes, but he’s portrayed as a 100% straight sexual dynamo.

Besson is one of the few directors I’ve seen who actually recognizes that our ideas of sexuality and gender performance might have changed drastically in the future

On the one hand, I like this take on Ruby Rod cause….I love Ruby Rod, he’s really entertaining.

On the flip side, I feel like this reading of him sorta carefully ignores that Ruby is treated as a joke through-out the entire film. Yes, he is a sex symbol within the context of the film, but to the viewer he’s pretty obviously meant to be seen as ridiculous and effete, as were most of the super-rich and super-useless passengers on the cruise - a stark contrast to Bruce Willis’s typically masculine and distinctly working class Korben Dallas. Korben is the hero of the movie and he gets to be that hero through the usual method of manly violence, in spite of the fact that the climax of the movie positions love and emotion as the most central and important part of life (romantic love, of course). Ruby, on the other hand, is pretty much useless for most of the film.

It IS interesting that he’s queer coded but clearly straight, but I feel like that’s not as progressive as it might seem, which isn’t to say that it’s not progressive at all. Just that I feel like the film presents him as something of a “failure” at masculinity, which is very typical in portrayals of the decadent upper class. He’s kind of the pinnacle of the materialistic and substanceless upper class we see in the film…

Couples, people who are each other’s kin or primary intimacies, a friend who takes care of a friend for 30 years in the same household—all should have basic civil rights. To bring that whole movement for social justice under the rubric of ‘gay marriage’ seems to me just to reinforce patriarchal notions of who is worthy of care and support. It also lets down the gay people who don’t want to be married.
The movement for gay marriage has had a strong push among very class-privileged people, because they are the people with trusts and with property and with health care. If you’re gay, black, poor and you don’t have any access to insurance, the question of whether your partner can be included on your insurance is not just relevant to the health needs of your life.
